Getting Graduate Work Visa Have Become Easier: Here’s Why
Worrying about what to do next after completing your study in Australia? What usually comes to mind most of the time for international students is to apply for a graduate work visa. Thankfully, the Ministry of Immigration, Citizenship, and Multicultural Affairs have decided to take a few steps in the application process. If you’re thinking of applying for this visa, what we can say is now is the best time to do it.
Getting a job after studying is one of the dreams of international students but holding a visa that limits what you can do may get in the way of making your dream become a reality. That’s where a graduate work visa comes in handy. Thanks to a temporary graduate work visa, international students who completed at least 2 years of study in Australia can work and stay longer usually from 18 months up to 2 years.
Just recently, a piece of good news has come to light when The Migration Amendment amends the Migration Regulations 1994 to temporarily remove the requirements for applicants for a Subclass 485 (Temporary Graduate) visa in the Graduate Work stream.
Originally, when you apply for a Graduate Work visa, you will need to comply with these requirements:
• nominate an occupation on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List;
• have a degree, diploma, or trade qualification closely related to that occupation; and
• be assessed by a relevant assessing authority as having skills suitable for that occupation.
However, today the ministry decided to temporarily remove these requirements when you apply for a graduate work visa. The above-mentioned requirements do not apply in respect of applications made between 1 July 2022 and 30 June 2023 (inclusive).
The process of applying for the Temporary Graduate (subclass 485) visa under the Graduate Work Streams (those who graduated from an Australian education or training institution) has become simpler and easier.
Under the graduate work streams, visa holders (and their family unit members) are free to study or work as they choose. There is no obligation to undertake work or study. The underpinning assumption is that these recently graduated international students are a valuable resource for Australia, whether they undertake further study or choose to work or travel, and are a potential source of future permanent migration to Australia.
Removing these requirements will encourage more international vocational education and training (VET) graduates to stay and work in Australia for a longer period. It will also open up the visa stream to a broader range of graduates with diplomas and trade qualifications that are not closely related to occupations on the skilled occupation list.
These requirements will be removed for all applications lodged from July 2022 to June 2023 so if you’re planning to apply for this visa, better to do it during this given period. The concession duration may, however, be extended by legislative instrument, should current labor shortages not be ameliorated after this period.
What you need to know when having a Temporary Graduate Work Visa (subclass 485):

(2) You can bring your family with you.
(3) You must hold or have held an eligible student visa.
(4) Studied in a CRICOS registered course
(5) Must be under 50 years old.
(6) Cost: AUD 1730
